The Problem Steps Recorder in Windows 7 is a little known powerful utility that eliminates your inability to describe the computer problem clearly to your tech support.It can be used to automatically capture steps taken in your computer like  text description of where you clicked, screen shots etc that can be used by a support professional or someone else helping you with a computer problem.

Steps to record and save steps on you computer :

Open Problem Steps Recorder (PSR) by, typing ‘PSR’ in the Start menu’s Search box and pressing [Enter] or  ‘problem’ in Control Panel Search box and click ‘Record steps to reproduce a problem’ .The user interface is very straight forward it looks like sound recorder.

1. Start Record or Alt + A (1) is used to start screen recording.On your computer, go through the steps to reproduce the problem . You may pause and resume recording at any time.
2. When done, press Stop Record or Alt + O (2).
3. Specify a file name and save the recording.
4. You can annotate problem steps using Add Comment (3). Use your mouse to highlight the part of the screen that you want to comment on, type your text in the Highlight Problem and Comment box, and then click OK.
5. Click the down arrow near Help (5) and click ‘Send to E-mail recipient’ to send the problem steps in email.
6. You can also adjust output settings using Settings option found there.

Running with Administrator privilege:

The PSR tool should be run as administrator to record steps that involve administrator privileges.

1. This can be done by clicking ‘Run as administrator’ option found in (5)
2. Or you can click shield icon when recording.

revealing passwords

A password is a string of characters or words used for authentication to prove one’s identity or grant access to a restricted area.

Today i’ll post different methods that can be used to reveal/unmask the hidden passwords in a web browser.

Note : This post is strictly for educational purpose only !

The following tricks have been tested in FireFox web browser.

• When you enter your password in a web browser you may find that it gets replaced by asterisks or dots.
• This is a good security measure to prevent others from stealing your login info.
• In some cases, the asterisks will be different when compared to the number of characters of your password.
• This adds additional security to prevent people from guessing your passwords.

But now the real scenario comes into play.

You have used “Remember my password” option in your web browser to store your password.Most modern browsers saves your password on behalf of these websites.

So if you want to change that password to a new one you are required to provide the old password to the website.Since you have used the remember option you might require to reveal the hidden password.In such cases the following tips comes handy. (Note: You may also try forgot my password option in that website if it is available. But this trick is very easy and consumes little or no time)

Trick 1:

These tricks mostly work in web browsers but to safeguard you should have physical security control since no security suite will alert for the first two tricks and these cannot be applied for windows password and the like.

This tutorial will help you to connect your mobile with PC using blue tooth technology and share your PC’s Internet with it.

Pre-requisites :

1. Any MIDP 2.0 mobile (like 6630, N73 , 6210 Navigator etc) with multitasking.
2. Hiisi Suite Client for mobile — Download here
3. Hiisi Suite Proxy for PC — Download Here
4. Bluetooth Dongle in case of Desktop. (Laptop has inbuilt support)
5. Java JRE (Installed in most of the PC’s)
6. Bluesoleil / Widcomm / Microsoft (Inbuilt for Win OS)

Steps :

1. Phone installation :

• Download Hiisi Suite Client for mobile.
• Copy both files to your Phone memory or Memory card
• Both files should reside in the same directory
• Then use your phone’s file manager to locate and run hiisi.jad file
• When prompted for installation install in the memory where the files are stored . i.e., phone memory or memory card
• Now a new application will appear as ‘Hiisi Proxy’.
• Now we have successfully set up the client on phone.

2. PC installation :

• Download Hiisi Suite Client for PC.
• Extract the files.
• Right click ‘Pihatonttu’ and click edit.
• You’ll find the following code

start javaw -Djava.library.path=. -cp .\lib\comm.jar;.\lib\jdic.jar;.\class Pihatonttu.PihatonttuMain COM15 null

• Now edit the COM port number to correct value and open Pihatonttu. (Please view step 5 to see a guide on finding your COM port number)
• You’ll get the following window. Minimize it.
• Now we have successfully set up the proxy server on PC.

3. Access Point Configuration:

NOTE : For this, you need to have a default access point

• Goto Settings->Phone settings->Connection->Destinations->Internet->Edit (May vary for your phone like Tools > Settings > Connection > Access points > Options >… )
  
• Click Options in left side and choose ‘Advanced Settings’
• Navigate to Proxy server address and input 127.0.0.1
  
• Navigate to Proxy Port Number and input 1234
  

{ OR }

• If your mobile service provider didn’t provide  access point , create a dummy access point.
• Input any name for access point.
• Then click advanced settings from left menu and input the Proxy server address as 127.0.0.1 and Proxy Port number as 1234
• Well done, now your dummy access point has been setup.

4. Making use of your PC’s internet connection :

• Run the ‘Hiisi Proxy’ software in your phone.
• Click yes if it asks ‘ Allow Hiisi Proxy to use network and send or receive data? ‘ (Refer Fig 1)
  
• Select ‘ Bluetooth Mode’ and wait till it inquires blue tooth devices. (Refer Fig 2)
• Choose your computers bluetooth name and wait for it to search serial ports. (Note : Make sure Hiisi Proxy is running in your PC)
• On the next screen you will see the btspp://….. selection.This is the RFCOMM service and you need to select this one. (select the first and not the second) (Refer Fig 3)
• Click Options in the left menu and mark Check now option under Blue tooth connection and click OK.
• Now you should get ‘Hiisi Proxy [Bluetooth Mode]‘ is idling. (Refer Fig 4)
• Now without closing the application , open web browser (The application which opens when you press 0 (zero) in nokia mobile phones).
• Make sure to select the correct access point when it asks.
• Now you will see the ‘Green color Bluetooth icon’ which denotes bluetooth data transfer that is happening between your PC and mobile.
• Also you will find the sites you are visiting in the PC Proxy window. (Refer Fig 5)
• That’s it, you now you can share PC internet with your mobile phone.

5. Finding your COM Port :

• Open Device Manager and expand Ports (COM & LPT)
• The first Bluetooth serial port should be the required one
• In this example COM 15 should be used.

Alternate ways:

• In bluesoleil software , Bluetooth ->My Device Properties.
• Choose Services tab.
• Note the first COM port.

Tips :

1. In the Hiisi proxy mobile client , you can choose various user agents in options/settings. The default Softbank will acts as Nokia N73 and displays pages optimized for it. Choosing other user agents will render the page in PC view.
2. If a webpage on phone displays 500 error then try changing the user agent to Softbank.
3. It works perfectly for access points of Indian Service Providers such as Airtel Mobile Office, Aircel.
4. Remove the proxy and port number when you want to connect to GPRS.
5. You can use Opera Mini too. Make sure you install using normal GPRS and then use this proxy to access internet.
6. Use IPV4 in access point settings.

This trick allows you to deny access to removable media and protect your PC against unauthorized software installations and prevent data leaks through removable media such as DVD, USB drives. This trick does not require any additional software to be installed , you can use the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) , a component of Windows 2000 and later Windows NT-based operating systems that provides system administrators and advanced users with a flexible interface through which they may configure and monitor the system.

Here we go,

1. Start ->type ‘mmc’ in search form and press enter.

2. Click File ->Add/Remove Snap-in

3. Double click ‘Group policy Object Editor’ and click ‘Finish’ and then ‘Ok’

4. Now repeat this step. i.e., FIle ->Add/Remove Snap-in –> Group Policy Editor

5. Click ‘Browse’ instead of  ‘Finish’ button.

6. Click on ‘Users’ tab.

7. Select the limited user account that needs to be restricted and click ok.

8 . Click ‘Finish’ and then ok.

9. Now double click Local Computer\{User} Policy –> User Configuration –> Administrative templates –> System.

10. Select ‘Removable Storage Access’ and in ‘Settings’ , double click

• ‘ CD and DVD: Deny read access ‘ and select ‘ Enabled ‘
• ‘ Removable Disks: Deny read access ‘ and select ‘ Enabled’

Note : You can give read only access by selecting ‘CD and DVD:Deny write access option’.

11. Click File->Save as and give a name for example “User restrictions”.
